The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”

After decades of activism, organizing and education, women won the right to vote in 1920. But not all women. There were many women and men who were excluded from voting. Native Americans couldn’t vote until 1947, Asian Americans until 1952 and African Americans weren’t guaranteed the right to vote until 1964. And the struggle for voting rights continues today.

The struggle for voting rights continues today.

Looking Back, Looking Ahead: COVID-19 and the Centennial Celebration

As the suffragists neared the finish line to the passage of the 19th Amendment, the 1918 flu pandemic descended upon the country, ending rallies and public gatherings and creating huge roadblocks to reaching the final goal. In addition, it brought illness and sadness into the homes of these brave women and made their work even more difficult. But succeed they did.

Today, we are faced with another pandemic, COVID-19. However, we are resilient and will continue to find creative and safe ways to continue the celebration of the 19th Amendment. Learn more on our Events page.

How will you celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Women’s Vote?

Votes for Women 100 is a consortium of Washtenaw County organizations and institutions hosting events to honor those who brought gender equality to the voting booth.

Women—not allowed to vote—had to persuade men to vote for their cause.

How they did it is a model for today’s advocates.

Calling a woman a suffragette started as a slur.
But women turned the tables and wore the term with pride.
You too can wear “suffragette” with pride in 2020.

Celebrate. Participate. Vote.
